Limitations of Composite Deck Tiles

Dirt Accumulation Underneath the Base

This is the biggest drawback of using outdoor composite deck tiles. Due to the drainage gaps in their design, hair, leaves, or small debris can fall under the plastic base.

Over time, if not cleaned, this accumulated dirt can clog drainage channels or become an ideal breeding ground for insects.

Solution: Use a high-pressure water spray on the gaps or lift the tiles to sweep clean periodically (about every 6 months – 1 year).

Hot Underfoot

Because they contain plastic, composite deck tiles absorb heat from the sun quite intensely. On hot sunny days (especially around noon), the surface of the composite deck tiles can become very hot, causing burns if you walk barefoot on them.

Note: If installing on a west-facing balcony or an uncovered rooftop, it is advisable to wear slippers or spray water to cool the surface before going outside.

Potential Fading (with low-cost tiles)

Although advertised as fade-resistant, low-end composite deck tiles can still fade by 10-20% after the first 1-2 years of exposure to UV rays.
