Structure of Anti-static Raised Access Floor

The structure of an anti-static raised access floor system is a close combination of mechanical components and conductive materials. This system is not merely floor panels placed on pedestals but a connected network ensuring load-bearing capacity and effective grounding of static charges.

Below are the detailed components:

Panel

This is the main working surface that bears direct load. The standard panel size is typically 600x600mm.

Steel Casing

• Made from high-quality cold-rolled steel sheets.
• The underside of the panel is embossed with a concave pattern (honeycomb or spherical shape) to increase compressive strength and distribute force evenly.
• The top surface is a flat steel sheet securely welded to the underside using resistance welding.
• The entire steel casing is powder-coated or galvanized to prevent rust.

• The hollow steel casing is filled with lightweight concrete or specialized foam concrete.
• Purpose: Makes the floor rigid, capable of bearing heavy loads, provides good sound insulation, and creates a solid feel underfoot (no metallic resonance).

• This is the most crucial layer for "anti-static" properties. The covering material is firmly adhered to the top steel surface.
• HPL (High Pressure Laminate): Most common, hard, good scratch resistance, heat resistant, often with a speckled pattern. Used for Data Centers and Server Rooms.
• PVC (Conductive Vinyl): Softer, good adhesion, dust-free. Used for Cleanrooms.

• The edges of the panel are encased with black PVC trim strips.
• Purpose: Protects the panel edges from chipping and conducts electricity (this trim is conductive) to ensure electrical continuity between panels.

Pedestal System

Pedestals support the floor panels and create the space underneath (plenum) for wiring.

Material: Entirely made of galvanized steel (for oxidation resistance and good conductivity).

3-Part Structure:

• Head: A flat square steel plate with holes for attaching to stringers. Often has a rubber pad on top for shock absorption (to prevent vibration and sound insulation). May have threaded adjustment for micro-height calibration (fine-tuning for a perfectly level floor).
• Tube: The cylindrical body, determining the basic floor height (typically from 15cm to 100cm depending on requirements).
• Base: A square steel plate placed on the concrete subfloor. Usually secured with specialized adhesive or expansion anchors.

Stringer

Stringers are long rectangular steel tubes that connect the pedestal heads, forming a grid framework.

Purpose:

• Maintains the fixed distance between pedestals, preventing shifting or tilting.
• Supports the edges of the floor panels, enhancing the overall system's load-bearing capacity.
• Strengthens electrical continuity between components for static discharge.

Grounding System

This is the most "invisible" yet crucial part for the system to be called "anti-static".

• Consists of bare copper cables (typically M50 or M70) running along the pedestal system beneath the floor.
• The raised floor pedestals are clamped to these copper cables.
• These copper cables are then connected to the building's grounding system (grounding rods).
• Principle: Static electricity generated on the floor surface is transferred through the HPL/PVC layer -> to the floor panel casing -> to the pedestal/stringer -> into the grounding cable -> dissipated into the earth.

Other Accessories

• Pedestal Adhesive: specialized adhesive for securely bonding the steel base to the concrete subfloor.
• Panel Lifter: tool for lifting floor panels when maintenance is needed for the wiring underneath.
• Floor Boxes/ Grommets: for routing cables from under the floor to workstations.
