Preparation before installing antibacterial vinyl flooring

1. Choose the right type of antibacterial vinyl roll flooring

Antibacterial vinyl flooring comes in a variety of models such as Gerflor (France), Tarkett (Sweden)... Moreover, each space has different antibacterial requirements, so you need to choose the right model that suits your needs.

Standard antibacterial vinyl flooring installation process

Basically, the installation steps for antibacterial vinyl flooring are quite similar to installing common vinyl flooring with the following 4 steps.

Step 1. Prepare the installation subfloor

Antibacterial vinyl flooring can be installed on concrete/cement, tile, laminate, or old vinyl subfloors, etc. However, the subfloor must meet 3 criteria: flat – clean – dry.

If the subfloor is uneven or pitted, it needs to be treated with self-leveling compound to ensure a smooth surface. The deviation should not exceed ±3mm over a length of 3m in any direction.
Clean dust, dirt, and grease from the old subfloor.
The subfloor moisture content must not exceed 6% to prevent blistering or peeling after gluing.

Note: The temperature in the installation room should range from 18-25°C and remain stable for at least 48 hours before and after installation. At the same time, ensure the installation area is well-ventilated to prevent the accumulation of moisture or harmful fumes from the adhesive.

**How to apply self-leveling compound

Clean the subfloor and apply a primer to increase adhesion.
Mix the compound with water in the correct ratio (according to the manufacturer's instructions).
Pour the compound onto the subfloor and spread it evenly with a squeegee or spiked roller.
Wait for it to dry completely for 12-24 hours before proceeding with vinyl floor installation.

Applying Self-Leveling Compound

Step 2. Proceed with installation

Mix and apply adhesive:

Stir the specialized adhesive in the container for about 10 minutes until uniform.
Lay the vinyl sheet on the subfloor to adjust the position, then roll back half of the sheet.
Use a notched trowel to spread the adhesive evenly over the subfloor area that has been rolled back, within a range of 2 – 4m².
Wait for the adhesive to become tacky to the standard adhesion level, about 10-20 minutes (depending on the adhesive type and actual temperature and humidity conditions).

Applying Floor Adhesive

Gluing the floor:

Slowly lower the vinyl sheet. It is best to glue it within 1 hour after applying the adhesive.
Glue from the center of the sheet outwards, pressing evenly to expel air and prevent blistering.
Repeat the process for the other half of the sheet.

Flattening the surface

After gluing, use a rubber mallet to gently tap the seams to stabilize the joint gap at about 2mm.
After about 40 minutes, use a 50kg roller to roll evenly over the entire floor surface to ensure it is flat, without wrinkles or waves.

Step 3. Seam welding

Immediately after installation, there will be seams between the vinyl flooring panels. To ensure the floor is sealed and prevents water or dust penetration, the installer will proceed to weld the seams using a welding rod with a diameter of 3 – 4mm.

After welding, use a specialized knife to trim off the excess welding rod to create a flat surface. Re-inspect the entire area and gently tap the surface to ensure the floor is stable, without bumps or misaligned seams.

Step 4. Cleaning and handover

Finishing the baseboards and edges:

Use a cover former trim to press and create a smooth curve between the floor and the baseboard.
Install skirting boards attached to the edge of the vinyl flooring to cover the gap, maintain hygiene, and increase the durability of the wall-floor junction.

Final cleaning:

After 24 hours, clean the surface with IBTECO Super Clean solution to remove any remaining dust, adhesive residue, or debris.
Re-inspect the entire floor before use.
